Our WH Labour Party welcomes the end of the two child limit; lifting 450,000 thousand children out of poverty by the end of this Parliament.

We are celebrating this historic milestone as the two child limit has been officially abolished, it received Royal Assent on 18 March 2026 the restriction and was lifted from the 6th April 2026.

This policy is absolutely the right thing for our community in Welwyn Hatfield. It is a life changing achievement that would only have happened under a Labour government. In Welwyn Hatfield alone over a thousand children will be brought out of poverty by the end of this parliament because of this Government’s decisive action.

Meanwhile, Reform UK and Treasury spokesman Robert Jenrick has pledged to restore the cap in full, which would plunge thousands of families back into poverty were Reform elected.

Labour Secretary of State for Work and Pensions Pat McFadden said:

“Today is an historic day, marking a turning point for 450,000 children across Britain. Scrapping the two-child limit is about more than family finances today, it’s about the Britain we’re building for tomorrow.”

By removing the cap, Labour is ensuring that that every child in Welwyn Hatfield has the best start in life.
