The UK withdrew from Erasmus+ in 2015 under Boris Johnson

A landmark moment for young people in Welwyn Hatfield and across the UK. The country will rejoin the Erasmus+ programme from 1 January 2027, restoring international exchange and study opportunities lost after Brexit.

This means students at local schools, Oaklands College and the University of Hertfordshire will again be able to spend a year in Europe as part of their courses without extra tuition fees. European students will be able to study here, enriching our campuses and community. Erasmus+ also supports apprentices, vocational learners, adult education and youth sport, so the benefits reach far beyond universities.

Our Labour MP Andrew Lewin called the decision brilliant news for young people in Welwyn Hatfield and confirmed he will write next year to local institutions so they can prepare students to express interest.

This was only possible because our Labour government prioritised young people and worked to rebuild international cooperation. In contrast, the Conservatives opposed rejoining and Reform MPs did not even attend the vote.

This is a step toward stronger UK and EU relations and a major boost for local opportunity. For students, parents and educators in Welwyn Hatfield, the world is opening up again.
