Welwyn Hatfield MP Andrew Lewin joined residents, veterans, and community groups across the borough to mark Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day, paying tribute to those who served and sacrificed in the armed forces.
On Sunday 9th November, Mr Lewin attended the Welwyn Garden City Remembrance Service in the morning and the Hatfield Hyde Service in the afternoon, joining hundreds of local residents, cadets, and community representatives in commemoration.
Reflecting on the day, Andrew Lewin said:
“We will remember them.
A heartfelt thank you to everyone across Welwyn Hatfield who attended and participated in Remembrance services today.
I paid my respects at 11am in Welwyn Garden City and this afternoon at Hatfield Hyde.
11am services took place in Hatfield, Welwyn Village and across the borough.
The support from the public has been exceptional – from veterans and cadets through to brownies and cubs acting as flag bearers.
I’m proud of our unity and common purpose, as we pay tribute to all who have served and thank everyone who continues to do so today.”
On Armistice Day, Tuesday 11th November, Mr Lewin joined the Royal British Legion and local residents at the Howardsgate service in Welwyn Garden City, where he observed the traditional two minutes’ silence.
Following the service, he said:
“Thank you to the Royal British Legion for leading the Armistice Day service and two minutes’ silence in Welwyn Garden City at 11am this morning.
On Armistice Day, we remember the guns falling silent on the 11th November 1918, marking the end of the First World War.
These words were written in 1914, but as we remember all who have served, they are timeless:
‘They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old.
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them.’”
The Welwyn Hatfield Labour Party thanks all who participated in local remembrance events and those who continue to serve in our armed forces and wider community.
