Andrew Lewin MP announces the change affecting Welwyn Hatfield's parents

MP for Welwyn Hatfield, Andrew Lewin has welcomed the Labour Government’s announcement of a major expansion in free childcare, describing it as a “game-changer” for working parents in Welwyn Hatfield.

From September, eligible working parents will be entitled to 30 free hours of childcare per week (over 38 weeks of the year) for children as young as nine months until they reach school age. This bold new policy, delivered by Labour, is expected to save families as much as £100 per week on nursery fees.

Mr Lewin emphasised that access to high-quality childcare is one of the most pressing issues for local families. “As both a parent and a politician, I know how important it is to feel confident that your child is safe, secure and happy. For too many families, the cost of nursery places has been as high as their mortgage or rent. Labour is stepping in to change that.”

The MP also highlighted the wider benefits of the policy: supporting parents who want to return to work, easing pressures on family budgets during the cost of living crisis, and ensuring nurseries can continue to provide high-quality care with fair pay for staff.

“This is exactly the kind of practical, progressive policy that shows Labour is on the side of working people,” Mr Lewin said. “We are tackling the everyday pressures families face and helping to build a fairer society.”

Parents wishing to benefit from the new support this autumn must apply by 31st August. Full details of eligibility and applications can be found at www.childcarechoices.gov.uk. Andrew Lewin also encouraged residents to get in touch with his office if they need further guidance.
