On Saturday Parliament was recalled to introduce emergency legislation regarding steel undertakings.
These will allow the Government to direct the workforce and order the raw materials needed to keep the blast furnaces running at British Steel. It will secure UK manufactured steel for nationally important projects like airports, rail and housing – essential to deliver growth as part of Labour’s Plan for Change.
This Labour government will always do what is necessary to keep Britain secure at home and strong abroad, and is doing what previous governments have failed to, acting in the national interest to help secure UK steelmaking for the future.
This is particularly important in the current changing world. The legislation will bring security to the thousands of steelworkers at the site, their families and the community of Scunthorpe.
Andrew Lewin MP said:
Legislation passed. The British Steel (Special Measures) Bill has now passed into law.
It’s in our national interest to protect such a strategically important sector. We must have the capacity to make steel in the UK for defence and critical infrastructure. The Government acted today to save the Scunthorpe site and ensure we retain that control.
A privilege to be in the Commons for the debate and to play my small part, on behalf of our community.
